Compensation for repeated ear infections following the insertion of a grommet

Daniel Bonner, specialist clinical negligence lawyer acting for the claimant successfully obtained an out of court settlement of £15,000 to compensate the claimant for her pain and suffering caused by grommet insertion into her left ear.

The claimant had a medical history of repeated ear infections in the right ear only and was scheduled to have a grommet in the right ear but the surgeon inserted a grommet into the left ear as well during the surgery on 1 March 2017.

The claimant had a period of ear infections in the left ear requiring multiple antibiotics until the grommet was removed on 26 March 2018.

Liability admissions were obtained from the Trust who admitted that the grommet should not have been inserted into the claimant’s left ear. The Trust did not accept that the claimant’s mild hearing loss or tinnitus was a result of the admitted negligence.

Following receipt of specialist expert evidence from an ear nose and throat surgeon, a negotiated settlement was achieved for £15,000.
